1. How many years experience do you have as a photographer?
I have been shooting weddings since 2009. I started out as a second photographer to other professionals in the industry (and still offer to second shoot for photographers a few times a year just to learn some new things!). So the 2018 season will be my 10th wedding season (wow time flies!). I’ve shot over 200 weddings.
2. What percentage of your photography business is dedicated to weddings?
My entire business is geared towards to engagements/weddings, but lately I have been doing a lot of family and newborns too!!! It seems like an obvious transition, since a lot of my couples end up contacting me for maternity/newborn photos a few years down the line! :) Because weddings are such unique situations (high pressure, things only happen once and you have to be able to act quickly in any setting or lighting, there are other people around besides just the couple that you have to work with, and it encompasses everything from portraiture, to family portraits, to landscape and architectural photography to detail photography to photojournalism) it takes a lot of experience and practice to be able to handle anything that is thrown at us!
3. Approximately how many weddings have you photographed?
I’d guess around 200, give or take.
4. Do you have a professional studio?
I have a small studio in my home for newborns and milestone sessions, but most of my work happens outside and on location.
5. What type of equipment do you use?
I use professional Nikon equipment. We have a D810, a D800 and 2 D700’s (which are all full frame professional bodies), with a mixture of super fast f1.4 prime lenses and f2.8 zoom lenses. We cover the entire range of 14mm (super wide) to 200mm (telephoto), and have a macro for close ups of rings. We also bring different lighting equipment for the reception.
6. Do you bring back equipment to weddings? If so, what?
Yes!!! I would NEVER go to a wedding without 2 full frame cameras, back-up lights/flashes, back-up lenses, back-up memory cards, batteries, even shoes & pants! I back up the memory cards as soon as I possibly can, and make a backup of that!
7. Would you visit the ceremony and/or reception sites prior to the wedding?
Generally we don’t, because everything depends on the light and the location on the day-of, and can change drastically! We like to go into a location as a blank slate, and let the light (and timeframe) direct us on where to go and what to do.
8. Do you have liability insurance?
Yes. Up to 2 million dollars of coverage for myself and my second shooter, as well as insurance on my equipment. So if anything happens to it I can replace it immediately.
9. Do you consider yourself skilled in diffused lighting and soft lighting? Explain.
Yes….. lighting is very much a photographers style…… and I would say that overall my style is soft natural diffused light. I don’t use flash heavily on portraits (unless it’s needed), and I tend to shoot into the sun, giving a soft hazy romantic feel to my images.
10. All negative/digital files are included correct?
Yes, what is included are both watermarked images for use on the web, and unmarked high resolution images ready for print! Although once you see the difference between a professional print and a consumer grade print, you’ll be blown away! Why invest so much money into great wedding photos if you don’t intend to display them in all their glory!
11. What is your payment policy (and/or deposit) based on the package I am interested in?
My payment policy is a $500 non-refundable /non-transferable retainer fee to secure the date, there is an instalment at the time of the engagement session, and the remainder is due the day of the wedding. This is the same for all packages.
12. What is your cancellation policy?
You can cancel at anytime by sending me written confirmation that you’d like to cancel. You would forgo the retainer fee, and any fees paid towards the cost of the engagement session, if it has been completed already. There isn’t any extra fees or hoops to jump through!
13. How long after the wedding will I get my proofs?
My contract states up to 3 months, and I post a few teasers on social media within a few days.
14. What is the cost of albums?
Professional albums are a significant investment, and will depend on the number of pages you require to tell the story of your day. Please budget around $1000-1500 for a fine art wedding album.
15. What is the cost per additional hour of shooting at the wedding?
Additional hours are $350 + hst for myself and my second shooter, and can be added on at any time.
16. What would you describe as your inspiration for shooting weddings?
My inspiration is love. Working with people at their happiest point in their lives is probably the most incredible job in the world!!! Kind of strange, but I’ve always been interested in relationships since I was a kid, so it’s really cool to be able to explore different types of relationships over the course of a session… seeing what makes people tick, how they work as a couple, what makes them laugh….. And don’t even get me started with weddings. The flowers, the dresses, the shoes, the rings, the sparkles….. I love it all!
In terms of where I get my inspiration….. I LOVE unique and carefree weddings. Being able to step outside of the box and have fun and be creative is always an amazing opportunity.
17. Why are you different than other photographers? (and how do you keep a “fresh eye” and perspective after so many weddings?
Oh man, now we’re getting to the hard questions! It’s always really hard to talk about myself……. I don’t want to say that it is what makes me “different” then other photographers because I don’t want to say that anyone “isn’t” these things….. but what makes me tick is passion. I am EXTREMELY passionate what what I do…… every inch of my being NEEDS to do this. So what keeps things fresh? The inner desire to do better. To top what I’ve already done. To make people go “wow”. To be a better photographer and a better me. I have a hunger to be the very best, and I’m just getting started!
18. What will you contribute to my wedding day and how will you make it special and unique?
I bring a personal touch. For me, it’s not a job, and you aren’t just clients. We build a relationship over the course of it all…… from helping pick decor, to going over details or helping with scheduling….. not only am I your photographer on the day of, but I am your “go-to” person. I’ve bustled dresses, helped with makeup and hair, given the bride a lift to the venue, I’ve even lit the candles at the ceremony site. I’ve run through the rain back to a hotel to grab a brides veil once so that her bridesmaids wouldn’t have to get wet….. little personal touches that make us more then just another vendor!
I often get comments from guests at the wedding who say that I have done an amazing job. Always funny to me, considering they haven’t seen a single photo, but they can see the hard work/effort and all the running around that I do, and they come up to me and thank me for all my hard work! I always find that the most touching! :)
