Since wedding season (and essentially shooting outside without getting frosh bite) is coming to an end, I have decided to take these next few chilly months to experiment with indoor lighting. I had been refered to this website a while back, but at the time was too busy to really give it the respect it deserves.

So after sitting at home reading Lighting 101 in it’s entirety one Saturday night,  and moving on to Lighting 102, I feel as though I should be documenting the lessons in hopes to both remember them and have an outlet to share my work!

This shot of my wonderful model was actually something I learned from Lighting 101 called “headshot in a corner”, and it’s actually something cool that I never even thought of. Since I am only working with one speedlight, I can only get light from one source. However, placing the light to camera left, and a giant wall to camera right, you can essentially bounce the light from the one light onto the dark side of the face filling in the shadow that would otherwise be cast from only the one light.

Here is what I mean when you have one light coming in from camera left, it throws the other half of his face in shadow. This is cool if you want sort of a dramtic moody effect, but for a headshot, not so great.

This Saturday I took my brother out for his first shoot…….we met with a young couple in the East end, and did a sunset shoot in downtown Whitby and at the lake front. Check it out:
